There is no better time for a scenic drive, and West Virginia has an abundance of beautiful scenery. With amazing mountain roads that wind through beautiful country, you can spend a whole weekend out exploring.

  1. Highland Scenic Highway

The Highland Scenic Highway winds through the Monongahela National Forest. You’ll climb to an elevation of over 4,500 feet as you drive the 43 miles route. There are four scenic overlooks on the highway, providing places to pull over and take beautiful pictures of the scenery and the Allegheny Mountains.

  1. Midland Trail National Scenic Highway

The Midland TrailĀ extends for over 180 miles across West Virginia. It winds through 41 towns with lots of sights and attractions to see along the way. The trail is divided into three sections to make it easier to plan a trip and find the attractions and scenery you want to see. The Advantage Valley & The State Capitol is the Western section of the trail and covers 80 miles. This section takes you along Route 60, which passes through the Great Kanawha River Valley, where you can experience the area’s industrial past.

  1. Coal Heritage Trail

The Coal Heritage Trail is a national trail that takes you through the state’s coal mining history. It winds through over 13 counties covering 187 miles of industrial heritage. Stop in any of the towns along the way for lunch, but make sure to stop in Beckley to check out the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine.

When you need to get away from the daily grind, turn one of these drives into a weekend excursion.
