New York has its mustard and onions, Chicago puts on everything but the kitchen sink, and Kansas City tops theirs in sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, but none of these stack up to the classic West Virginia hot dog. Loaded with slaw and chili, these hot dogs are a tad on the heavy side, but once you’ve had one, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. Here are just a few of the best places to grab a dog in Wayne County, West Virginia.

  1. Sam’s Hot Dog Stand – Numerous Locations

Founded in Huntington, Sam’s Hot Dog Stand now has 45 locations across four states. Some say a chain wrecks the tastes and care of the food, but once you’ve had a bite of a Sam’s chili and slaw dog, you’ll beg to differ. With fresh cut onions, coleslaw made fresh daily, and their famous chili, Sam’s is a local favorite.

  1. Stewarts Original Hot Dogs – Kenova, Huntington, and East Huntington

Since 1932, Stewarts Original Hot Dogs has been serving up some of the best chili and slaw dogs in the area. Family-owned and operated, this hot dog joint can make a hot dog any way you like it, offering 11 types of toppings for their dogs. Locals might say dolling it up with sauerkraut, cheese, or pickles is blasphemous, but don’t let that stop you from doing your own take on the West Virginia dog.

Although eating one of these bad boys every day probably isn’t good for your figure, it’s an indulgence that you can enjoy when the mood strikes you, especially in Wayne County.
