Situated on the banks of Twelvepole Creek and just minutes from Beech Fork Lake, Lavalette, West Virginia, is a paradise for anglers, boaters, and outdoorsmen. When spring and summer come, plan one of these activities for a day of fun out on the water.
- Fishing on Twelvepole Creek
Stretching 32 miles through Wayne County, Twelvepole Creek is a tributary of the Ohio River and one of the most popular fishing spots near Lavalette. Numerous species of fish call the creek home, and the shallow waters allow you to fish from shore, in the water, or from a boat. Cast a line to catch smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, catfish, trout, and others. Some locals report catching fish of up to 5 or 6 pounds, which is ideal for a delicious dinner. As with any other waterway in the state, make sure to carry your West Virginia fishing license.
- Boating at Beech Fork Lake
Formed from one of Twelvepole Creek’s tributaries, Beech Fork Lake is a 720-acre reservoir just east of downtown Lavalette. The calm waters of this lake make it an excellent location for boating, especially during warmer months. A boat launch in Lavalette and the marina at Beech Fork State Park provide easy access to the serpentine-shaped lake without any fees.
Paddle boats, kayaks, canoes, johnboats, and stand-up paddle boards are available at the marina and boat dock from Memorial Day through Labor Day from noon to 8 p.m.
If you’re longing for warmer weather and end to cabin fever, these aquatic activities are sure to give you something to get excited about.
